“The purpose of our organization is to enlist volunteers to make Narberth a more attractive community”

-Kathryn Westman Spring, 1979

Since 1967, the volunteers of N.I.C.E. have created & helped the Borough maintain Narberth’s public gardens & open space. We are funded solely by donations.

The History of N.I.C.E.

N.I.C.E. (Narberth Improvement & Cleanup Endeavor) was created in 1967 by two Narberth residents, Emily Parkin and Kathryn Westman, who wanted to clean up the trash around the Narberth train station.

Over the next 10 years, their need to eliminate unsightly trash grew into a desire to improve the appearance... of the train station by planting flowers and shrubs.

In 1976, Narberth’s Mayor Jeff Eyster took over the day-to-day operation of N.I.C.E. from Emily and Kathryn. Jeff enlisted the help of another Narberth resident Constantine (Connie) Dydynsky a retired railroad employee. Jeff and Connie planted many of the trees we now admire around the station.

After vacationing in Switzerland with his wife Clara, Jeff was inspired by the Swiss flair for decorating train stations with flowers. He then expanded the scope of N.I.C.E. to include all of Haverford Ave from the Northside station down to both sides of the tunnel and the Southside station and parking lot gardens.

Jeff Eyster designed several other small garden areas and recruited Narberth resident volunteers to help maintain those gardens. Many Narberth residents have volunteered their time over the years. Some of our long-time volunteers are Ted Ahern, Mary Jane Cobbs, Anne Kelley, Sally Kuder, Dennis Manley, Dave & Anna Mae Sprows and Matt Valentine. And some of our current volunteers are Ellen Briggs, Nancy Grundahl, Marie Kelly, Joan Molloy and Wendy White.

N.I.C.E. is committed to beautifying downtown Narberth by helping the Borough cleanup and maintain the public space around the train stations.

N.I.C.E. is funded only by donations from Narberth and near-Narberth neighbors.
